Wuhan University of Technology

 

Wuhan University of Technology is one of the key universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of P. R. China, and also one the universities entering the State-211 Project.

Wuhan University of Technology (WUT), composed the former Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Transportation University and Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University, was established on May 27th, 2000. The university, located in the famous historical and cultural city of Wuhan, covers an area of 1,850,000 m2 with two main campuses respectively situated at Mafangshan and Yujiatou in Wuchang. Another new campus under construction covers an area of 1,330,000 m2.

The University has eight major disciplines that include engineering, natural sciences, humanities, management, economics, law, philosophy and education. The university enjoys its own characteristics and superiorities in the fields of materials science and engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, management science and engineering, mechanic engineering, marine engine engineering, automotive engineering, and civil engineering. It is the only university that has established the discipline of navigation technology among the Chinese key institutions.

The total enrollment of the university is 45,000 students, among which 38,000 are undergraduates and over 10000 are graduates for Doctoral programs and Master programs. Among the 2,900 academic faculty members, there are 500 professors, 3 academicians of China Academy of Engineering, 2 academicians of China Academy of Science, 3 Cheungkong Scholars and 198 members who entitled to special subsidies from the government.

The university is authorized to confer 77 bachelor’s degree programs, 130 master degree programs, and 60 PhD degree programs. There are also 7 post-doctoral mobile stations for scientific research. The number of students is in the front rank among the Chinese universities and colleges.

The university has extensively established academic links with more than 100 external universities and institutions. The university has engaged more than one hundred famous foreign scholars as Concurrent or Honorary Professor for the university, and often receives experts, scholars and professors from other countries or regions to teach or do research. The university also sends abroad a number of teachers, professors, and scholars to study and to attend international academic conferences each year. Some of them have been engaged as Guest Professor, Special Professor or Lecturer by foreign host institutions. The close links and frequent exchange with international partners in the field of education, academy and science keeps the university at high levels of education and research. In 1950 the university began to admit foreign students and has awarded more than ten different countries’ students ever since with a bachelor, master degree or a certificate for further study.

There are 24 schools in charge of teaching and learning for about 48,000 students. Their main task is to develop the students into innovative and comprehensive talents. Now, some 210,000 graduates from our university are playing a more and more important role in the fields of scientific research, economic construction and social service.
